Metro Inc. is a Montreal grocer, unrelated to Germany’s Metro AG, with around 1,000 food stores, from supermarkets to corner markets, plus 640 pharmacies in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. Its payroll tops 97,000 people, and most store and warehouse staff are unionized.

Metro’s union pay scale, bar by bar

The latest UFCW contract, signed for 54 Metro stores in Ontario, raises the highest full-time step by $4.60 an hour over the life of the deal. It also brings paid sick days for full-timers to five and pays a signing bonus as high as $1,500.

Apply online on Metro’s careers site or drop off an application at the store. A recruiter phones the people on the short list, then you meet the manager and someone from Human Resources, sometimes for a second round.
Some positions add a skills, language or personality test and a reference check. Offers are made over the phone, and your first days include a welcome session and a meeting about benefits. If nothing fits right away, Metro keeps your résumé on file for at least a year.
Quebec postings are in French, and you will need to speak it there. Drivers need a class 1 licence, and the Etobicoke warehouse asks for basic English.
Glasses, sick days and pension: Metro extras
Metro offers pension plans plus group health and life insurance to employees who qualify. Under the UFCW contract, Ontario store staff also get up to $400 for glasses every two years and $150 toward safety shoes.
The Laval produce centre offers paid training, dental care, vision care and free parking, and Etobicoke pays for training and orientation too. One Montreal store even pays its cashiers every week.
New Food Basics stores keep opening in Ontario, as do Super C stores in Quebec, and each hires a crew of 80 to 120, sometimes at hiring days before opening. Pick the Metro store or warehouse nearest your home and apply while that posting is open.
