A café runs on a small crew, so the ladder is short. Most people start on the bar and move up to shift supervisor once they know every station.

A day between the first latte and the last mop
The opening crew usually arrives before six in the morning to switch on the machines, grind beans and fill the display case. The busiest stretch runs from opening until about ten, when commuters line up at the counter and the drive-thru.
Afternoons are slower and go to restocking, cleaning and training. The closing crew washes every jug and filter, sweeps the floor and takes out the grounds before locking up.
💡 Offer to open the café: managers struggle to fill shifts that begin at five, so being free early in the morning is often what gets a first-time barista hired.

Starbucks calls its staff partners. Every partner gets drink and food discounts, but the bigger benefits need an average of 20 hours weekly: 160 paid hours in two months in a row to qualify, then 240 hours each quarter to keep them.

Franchise owners hire their own baristas
Tim Hortons has about 4,000 restaurants run by roughly 1,500 local owners. Second Cup belongs to Foodtastic, a Montreal franchisor, and Waves also sells franchises.
At those chains, the owner of each location sets wages and schedules and reads every application. Starbucks runs most of its cafés itself and posts their openings on one national careers site.

Blenz has about 58 cafés, nearly all in BC; Balzac’s has 16 across the Toronto area and southwestern Ontario; Bridgehead has about 18, all in Ottawa.
Barista questions before a first shift
Do I need to know how to make lattes already?
No. The chains train new baristas on their own recipes and machines during the first shifts. Friendly service and speed matter more at the interview.
Do baristas get tips?
Usually, from the jar on the counter and from card payments. Each café decides how to divide them among the crew, so ask the manager.
Can a teenager get hired as a barista?
Often, yes. Starbucks generally asks for 16, and some franchise cafés take students a year younger where provincial law allows.
⚠️ Mind the steam wand and the hot water: small burns are common in the first weeks, and you spend the whole shift on your feet behind a narrow counter.
Order a drink, then ask about openings
Visit the café you want to join after the lunch crowd has gone. Watch how the team works the bar, and ask the supervisor whether they take applications at the counter or only online.
