Inside Canada Post: plants, depots and delivery routes
Canada Post runs 22 processing plants and 423 letter carrier depots, plus more than 21,400 delivery routes. Most beginners start in one of two places: sorting inside a plant or delivering out of a depot.
Processing plants
Clerks run sorting machines around the clock, often on evening and night shifts.
Letter carrier depots
Carriers put the mail in route order each morning, then leave on foot or by van.

Carriers use their own vehicle on country roads and at the city’s edge.

Canada Post wages under the new union contracts
Postal workers ratified new contracts with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in June, and they last five years. They raise pay 6.5% in year one and 3% in year two, then match inflation.

The same contracts open the door to regular Saturday and Sunday parcel delivery. That creates two new kinds of part-time job with a guaranteed floor of hours.

A criminal record check done with fingerprints, plus a driver’s abstract for driving jobs.
Postal work falls under federal labour rules, so the minimum hiring age is 18. If you declare a criminal record, screening can stretch to 120 days, and mail carriers must lift up to 22.7 kg.
⚠️ Door-to-door delivery is being phased out: about 4 million addresses will move to community mailboxes over five years, starting with 136,000 in 13 communities. Walking routes will shrink, while parcel, plant and weekend work carries on.
